Description

Citronellal is a monoterpenoid, the main component of citronella oil which gives it its distinctive lemon aroma. It has a role as a metabolite and an antifungal agent. It is a monoterpenoid and an aldehyde.

Citronellal is a main isolate in distilled oils from the plants Cymbopogon (excepting C. citratus, culinary lemongrass), lemon-scented gum, and lemon-scented teatree. The (S)-(−)-enantiomer of citronellal makes up to 80% of the oil from kaffir lime leaves and is the compound responsible for its characteristic aroma.

Citronellal has insect repellent properties, and research shows high repellent effectiveness against mosquitoes.Another research shows that citronellal has strong antifungal qualities.

Because of its strong aroma and unstable chemical properties, citronellal is only used in a small amount of cosmetics such as low-grade lilacs and lilies-of-the-valley and mosquito repellent fragrances. Citronellal is mainly used in soap and cosmetic flavor formulations, the dosage is less than 10%. IFRA has no restrictions. At present, the amount of citronelloaldehyde directly used as perfume in China is not too much. A large amount of citronelloaldehyde is used in the synthesis of hydroxyl citronelloaldehyde and levo menthol and other spices with wider uses.
